You're standing in the lumber aisle at Home Depot. That said, the project plans call for a 45-inch cut. Your tape measure only shows feet and inches. Quick — what's that in feet?
Three feet nine inches. And or 3. 75 feet if you're doing math on a calculator.
That's the answer. But if you've ever stood there second-guessing yourself, or watched someone measure twice and cut wrong because they rushed the conversion, you know it's not always that simple in the moment.
What Is an Inch-to-Foot Conversion Really
An inch is 1/12 of a foot. That's the whole relationship. And twelve inches make one foot. Always has, always will.
But here's where people trip up: they try to do the division in their head and get stuck on the decimal. Now, forty-five divided by twelve. Three goes into forty-five three times with nine left over. That remainder — nine — is inches, not a decimal.
So 45 inches = 3 feet 9 inches.
If you need the decimal for a spreadsheet or a CAD program, divide the remainder by twelve. Think about it: nine divided by twelve is 0. Also, 75. So 3.75 feet.
The Mental Shortcut Most People Miss
You don't need long division. You need the twelve-times table.
- 12 inches = 1 foot
- 24 inches = 2 feet
- 36 inches = 3 feet
- 48 inches = 4 feet
Forty-five sits between 36 and 48. It's nine past 36. That's your answer: 3 feet 9 inches.
This works for any measurement. Find the nearest lower multiple of twelve. Also, the difference is your inches. The multiple divided by twelve is your feet.
Why the Decimal Exists at All
Decimals showed up because calculators and computers prefer base ten. So naturally, a tape measure doesn't show 3. 75 feet. But construction, carpentry, and most trades still think in twelfths. It shows 3' 9".

You're measuring a window rough opening. The spec says 45 inches. Now, your brain sees "forty-five" and wants to divide by ten because metric trained you that way. Or you divide by twelve but forget the remainder is inches, not tenths.
I've seen experienced DIYers write "3.9 feet" on a cut list. In practice, that's three feet and ten-point-eight inches. Not the same thing.
The "Point Nine" Trap
This is the single most common error. Someone calculates 45 ÷ 12 = 3.That said, 75 as "point seven five inches" or rounds it to . Consider this: 75, then misreads the . 9 because "it's close to 4 feet.
Point seven five feet is nine inches. Point nine feet is ten point eight inches. That's nearly two inches of error.
On a window? Still, that's a reorder. On a stair stringer? That's a teardown.
When Rounding Bites You
Rounding 3.75 to 3.Think about it: 8 or 3. 7 seems harmless. But stack five of those errors — five pieces of lumber, five stair treads, five cabinet openings — and you're off by half an inch or more.
In finish carpentry, half an inch is visible. But in framing, it's a headache. In structural work, it can fail inspection.
Don't round until the final cut. And even then, round deliberately, not lazily.
How to Convert Without a Calculator
You have three reliable methods. Pick one and practice it.
Method 1: The Multiple-of-Twelve Anchor
Memorize the twelve-times table up to 12 × 10 = 120. That covers most residential measurements.
- See 45 inches
- Nearest lower multiple: 36 (that's 3 feet)
- Difference: 9 inches
- Result: 3' 9"
Takes two seconds once the multiples are automatic.
Method 2: Chunk Subtraction
If you don't have the multiples memorized, subtract chunks of twelve.
45 - 12 = 33 (1 foot) 33 - 12 = 21 (2 feet) 21 - 12 = 9 (3 feet) Remainder 9 = 9 inches

Method 3: The "Half-Foot" Trick
Six inches is half a foot. Use it as a reference.
45 inches. Day to day, that's 36 + 9. Or think of it as 48 - 3.
Forty-eight inches is four feet exactly. Three inches short of four feet. So 3' 9".
This reverse method is surprisingly fast for measurements close to a foot mark. Fifty-nine inches? That's 60 - 1 = 4' 11". Seventy-one inches? 72 - 1 = 5' 11".
What About Oddball Numbers?
Sixty-seven inches.
Multiple method: 60 is 5 feet. Remainder 7. Answer: 5' 7".
Chunk method: 67 - 12 = 55 (1), -12 = 43 (2), -12 = 31 (3), -12 = 19 (4), -12 = 7 (5). Answer: 5' 7".
Reverse method: 72 is 6 feet. Because of that, 72 - 67 = 5. So 5' 7".
All three land on the same answer. The multiple method is fastest once you know your twelves.
Common Mistakes That Cost Time and Money
Writing Decimal Feet on a Cut List
If your cut list says "3.75 ft" and you hand it to a guy with a tape measure, he has to convert it back. That's a translation layer where errors live.
Write 3' 9". Everyone on site reads it the same way.
Mixing Units Mid-Project
One plan in inches. Another in feet. A supplier quoting in decimal feet. You converting on the fly.
Pick one unit system for the project. Convert everything upfront. Label your drawings. Put a sticky note on your saw station: "ALL CUTS IN FEET AND INCHES.
Forgetting the Hook on Your Tape Measure
The metal hook on a tape measure moves. It's designed to compensate for its own thickness — push for inside measurements, pull for outside.
But if you're measuring 45 inches from a corner and you hook the tape over the corner instead of butting it... you just added the hook thickness. Consider this: maybe 1/16". Maybe 1/8".
On a 45-inch cut, that's sloppy. On a 45-inch window rough opening, that's a gap.
Measuring from the Wrong End

"Measure from the left" means the left edge of the material, not the left edge of your tape measure. Too many times I've watched someone line up the hook of their tape with the left edge of their workbench instead of the left edge of the board they're cutting.
