How Much Is 1.5 Cubic Feet
You’re standing in the aisle of a hardware store, staring at a bag of mulch. Or maybe you’re measuring a moving box, trying to figure out if your bookshelf will fit in the back of a hatchback. And the label says 1. 5 cubic feet.
And you have absolutely no idea what that looks like in real life.
Don’t worry. Almost nobody does. We’re used to linear measurements — inches, feet, yards. But volume? Volume is sneaky. It’s three dimensions at once, and our brains are terrible at visualizing it without a reference point.

What Is 1.5 Cubic Feet
A cubic foot is a cube that measures 12 inches on every side. That's why length, width, height — all one foot. Stack 1,728 cubic inches together and you’ve got one cubic foot.
So 1.5 cubic feet is exactly that, plus half of it again.

Why It Matters / Why People Care

Shipping. Carriers use dimensional weight pricing. A lightweight but bulky box that’s 1.5 cubic feet might cost more to ship than a dense 0.5 cubic foot box of the same weight. Understanding volume saves money.
Concrete and construction. A standard 60-lb bag of Quikrete yields about 0.45 cubic feet. Need 1.5 cubic feet for a fence post footing? That’s three and a half bags. Round up to four.
The pattern: anytime you’re buying, moving, filling, or shipping stuff*, cubic feet show up. And 1.5 is a sweet spot — big enough to matter, small enough to handle.
How to Visualize It (Real-World References)
Forget formulas. Use objects you know.
The kitchen test
- A standard microwave (countertop, mid-size) ≈ 1.5 cu ft interior
- A large stockpot (12-quart) ≈ 0.5 cu ft — so three of them
- A standard dishwasher interior ≈ 8–10 cu ft — so 1.5 is roughly one-sixth of a dishwasher
- A gallon milk jug = 0.134 cu ft — you’d need 11 of them
The moving test
- A medium moving box (18×14×12 inches) = 1.75 cu ft — close enough
- A banker’s box (letter/legal) ≈ 1.2 cu ft — add a shoebox and you’re there
- A large suitcase (checked, 27") ≈ 4–5 cu ft — so 1.5 is about a third of a big suitcase
The outdoor test
- A standard wheelbarrow (contractor grade) ≈ 6 cu ft — 1.5 is a quarter load
- A bag of mulch (typical 2 cu ft bag) — 1.5 is three-quarters of that bag
- A 5-gallon bucket = 0.67 cu ft — two and a quarter buckets
The weird but useful test
- A cat (average adult, curled up) ≈ 0.5 cu ft — so three cats. Don’t try this at home.
- A basketball ≈ 0.25 cu ft — six basketballs packed tight
- A standard pillow ≈ 0.75 cu ft — two pillows smashed together

How to Calculate It Yourself
You’ll need this when the object isn’t a neat rectangle.
For boxes and rectangular spaces
Measure length × width × height in inches. Divide by 1,728.
Example: A planter box 36" long × 12" wide × 6" deep. Still, 2,592 ÷ 1,728 = 1. 36 × 12 × 6 = 2,592 cubic inches. 5 cubic feet exactly.
Pro tip: measure inside* dimensions for containers. The walls take up space.
For cylinders (pots, buckets, posts)
Formula: π × radius² × height
A 12-inch diameter pot (radius 6") that’s 12 inches deep: 3.14 × 6² × 12 = 3.14 × 36 × 12 = 1,356 cubic inches. Also, 1,356 ÷ 1,728 = 0. 78 cubic feet.
Two of those pots = 1.56 cu ft. Close enough.
For irregular shapes
Fill it with something measurable. Packing peanuts. Water (if watertight). Dry rice. Dump the filler into a known container — a 5-gallon bucket, a box you’ve already measured. Count how many times you fill the known container.
Low tech. Works every time.
For soil and mulch (the coverage shortcut)
Skip volume math. Use coverage math instead.
1 cubic foot covers:
- 12 sq ft at 1 inch deep
- 6 sq ft at 2 inches deep
- 4 sq ft at 3 inches deep
- 3 sq ft at 4 inches deep
So 1.5 cubic feet covers:
- 18 sq ft at 1"
- 9 sq ft at 2"
- 6 sq ft at 3"
- 4.5 sq ft at 4"
Measure your bed area. Pick your depth. Divide. That’s
how many cubic feet you need.
Example: A 12 sq ft garden bed you want to fill 3 inches deep. 12 ÷ 4 = 3 cubic feet needed.
No measuring tape required — just pacing and a calculator app.
Why This Matters
Misjudging volume leads to real problems:
Underbuying means multiple trips, project delays, and the universal feeling of standing in an aisle holding an empty bag.
Overbuying wastes money and creates storage headaches. That extra bag of mulch becomes a 6-month eyesore.
Wrong container size means your new planter sits empty or your storage bin won't close.
Knowing what 1.5 cubic feet looks like prevents all of these. You walk into any store and immediately recognize the right size.
